HEARD ABOUT ESE?

Image
Have you heard about Ese?  Golden black Ese as we used to call her.  Her skin so beautiful that most people called her the goddess of the black race.  She went to papa Ijebu, who mixed pepper with lemon water, he added a little bit of carol white and a pinch of something which name, I can't recall. Suddenly the black in her skin vanished like magic, she was now "African snow white"  and she reigned in her head and her new found skin.  Ese was walking on the air, almost like her new skin gave her super powers.  Awhile later, there were cracks, itches, scratches and peelings... Her body was at war with itself.  Ese's skin changed colors more rapidly than a chameleon, no one could keep up. Then came the decay that went from her skin deep inside of her and in a flash, she was gone.   Ese died trying to be who she wasn't, she was so dissatisfied with being black in a black skin and I wonder why, what is so wrong with being black?

A RIDE WITH MY UNCLE

Interesting and fun moments can also be the time you learn the best lessons ever. So when you are laughing, pay attention, there might just be a thing or two to learn. So on Monday, I decided to ride to the office with my uncle. It was a short ride but fun and insightful.

On our way that morning, I had seen this really cute guy with beard and now that I think of it,my uncle must have seen me look at this bearded guy a little longer than usual (lol FYI...I'm not attracted to bearded guys, the guy was just cute). Well, that guy and my stare led to this conversation

Uncle: (giggles)you know I just recently wanted  to keep beards? They must have told you why I changed my mind and shaved it off

Me: (laughing) no, I wasn't told

Uncle: really? They didn't tell you what  happened?

Me: (curiously) no, what happened?

Uncle:  (laughs)so I wanted to know how many world wealthy men keeps grown beard and I went on google to search and I found out that none of them did

Me: (laughing my head out) oh no please

Uncle:  I'm telling you  (sighs) so I asked        myself, "why are you keeping beard, are      you now a poor man?"and the next day I went to the saloon and shaved it off. I mean, the people I look up to are not keeping it,why should I?

Me: (stops laughing) yah

Uncle:  you must dress like the person you want to be like, the person you dream of        becoming. Act like your mentor.

Me:  so true (I slide into my imagination                  and completely lost in thought)

It was a fun ride and I got a word most of us have probably heard before but never really paid attention to. The question is, who is your mentor? How often do you follow in their steps?. It's one thing to say "that is my mentor" it's another thing to follow the details of their life and success. My three mentors in art are Chinua Achebe,Chimamanda Adichie and Athol Fugard and one thing they all have in common in writing, is keeping Africa and the struggles of Africans in Focus. That much I can say I try to follow but there are really other things in their lives that made them who the are/were. Things that made them stand out in Africa and the world. It  is just as important to pay attention to those details if I must reach their heights. I haven't really been paying attention and that must change if I must reach my goals.

Following in others footsteps doesn't entail you losing yourself. If you're decent about it, it will only help you stay focused and reach your goal. Act like your mentor with the aim to be better. If your mentor doesn't drink alcohol, there must be a good reason why. If your mentor smiles often, there must be a reason why. Act like your mentor(s) but while at it, do the good things they do and leave out the bad ones. Believe it or not, their good  habits made them and their bad habits wrecked them. Be wise, and always aim at being a better version of your hero or mentor.           @lizzys_haven
